- INTRODUCTION
- ============
-
- SCRNCAP is an easy-to-use screen capture utility that allows you to
- capture portions of an IBM text screen directly to a printer or to
- an ASCII text file.
-
- SCRNCAP can be used to capture error messages to a file or to
- transfer information from one application to another. SCRNCAP was
- developed for internal use by V-Soft for the purpose of
- incorporating copies of program screens directly into user manuals
- or other documents.
-
-
- GETTING STARTED
- ===============
-
- Using the DOS MD command, create a directory on your hard drive or
- boot diskette called SCRNCAP.
-
- EXAMPLE: MD SCRNCAP
-
- Now copy all files to the subdirectory you have created for SCRNCAP.
-
- EXAMPLE: COPY [SOURCE:]*.* [DESTINATION:]\SCRNCAP
-
-
- LOADING SCRNCAP
- ===============
-
- To load SCRNCAP, change to the subdirectory containing the program
- and simply type SCRNCAP. SCRNCAP will then be loaded into memory,
- and will remain resident until you reboot your system or unload
- SCRNCAP from memory.
-
- EXAMPLE: CD\SCRNCAP
- SCRNCAP
-
- Whenever you wish to use SCRNCAP just press the CTRL + ALT + S keys
- and you are ready to capture screens.
-
- If you find yourself using SCRNCAP on a regular basis, you may wish
- to place the above commands in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to automate
- the loading process each time you turn your system on.
- INVOKING AND USING SCRNCAP
- ==========================
-
- When you invoke SCRNCAP by pressing CTRL + ALT + S, a status bar
- will appear across the bottom of your screen. This status bar
- provides step by step instructions and inquiries during the capture
- process.
-
- The initial status line will read:
-
- Position to top, then press Enter.
-
- You will also notice a blinking rectangular "cursor" - this is the
- tool used to "mark" the text you wish to capture. Move the cursor
- using the following keys:
-
- Up Arrow Move the cursor up one line at a time
- Down Arrow Move the cursor down one line at a time
- Left Arrow Move the cursor to the left one character
- Right Arrow Move the cursor to the right one character
- Home Move the cursor to the beginning of a line
- End Move the cursor to the end of a line
- PgUp Move the cursor to the top line of the screen
- PgDn Move the cursor to the bottom line of the screen
- Esc Exit SCRNCAP and return to the underlying program
-
- After you have positioned to the top left corner of the capture
- area, press Enter.
-
- The status bar should now read:
-
- Position to bottom, then press Enter.
-
-
- Now move the cursor to the bottom right corned of the text you wish
- to capture and press the Enter key. The marked text is ready to
- print or save to an ASCII file.
- PRINTING / SAVING TEXT
- ======================
-
- The status bar will now read:
-
- Print to LPT(1,2,3) or (F)ile:
-
-
- Select where you want to direct the captured text.
-
- If you choose to capture the text to a file, you will be prompted
- to enter a filename.
-
- You will now be prompted to enter a Left Margin. Type a number for
- the left margin (0 to 99 characters), or just press the Enter key
- to use the default left margin of 0 characters.
-
- The marked text will now be sent directly to the printer or text
- file.
-
-
- ENDING SCREEN CAPTURE
- =====================
-
- To abort a screen capture but leave SCRNCAP resident for use press
- the Escape key.
-
-
- UNLOADING SCRNCAP FROM MEMORY
- =============================
-
- To un-install SCRNCAP and remove it from memory - go to a DOS
- prompt, change to the directory that contains SCRNCAP, and type:
-
- SCRNCAP /U
-
- DO NOT USE THE UNLOAD OPTION IF YOU HAVE LOADED SCRNCAP HIGH
- USING THE DOS 5.0 LOADHI COMMAND. THIS WILL LOCK UP YOUR SYSTEM!
-
-
- TROUBLESHOOTING

-
- TECHNICAL DETAILS
- =================
-
- SCRNCAP requires approximately 9.5k of available RAM. To maximize
- available conventional RAM, you can load SCRNCAP into high DOS
- memory. If you load SCRNCAP high using the DOS LOADHI (LH) command,
- an attempt to unload SCRNCAP using the /U parameter will almost
- certainly cause your system to lock up.
-
- SCRNCAP was developed using IBM and Compaq systems running DOS 5.0
- and DOS 3.31, and has been tested on a variety of other IBM compatible
- systems.
-
- SCRNCAP has been tested under the Windows 3.0 and 3.1 operating
- environments and may be used as a replacement for the Windows text
- mark and paste commands in cases where all aspects of the screen
- text must be preserved... Windows removes certain text graphics
- characters during a cut and paste operation.
